YORK (WGME) — It’s the end of an era as the “Gateway into Maine” is set to change.
Crews were putting out cones Monday near the York toll plaza in anticipation of the start of demolition in the coming days.
Built in 1969, the old stretch of toll booths will be replaced by a highspeed electric toll system, which goes live on Wednesday.
Once it’s ready for use, crews will salvage a few remaining pieces from the old plaza.
When that’s done, traffic will be diverted through the booths while the canopy is removed.
The entire toll structure is expected to be demolished by Oct. 7.
