Winterport- A Winterport man accused of child abuse and exploitation was arrested in Texas and has been brought back to Maine.
A state police spokesperson says 32-year-old Steven Mathis was interviewed by detectives and allegedly confessed to sexually abusing several children along with uploading images of the abuse online and disseminating the images to other people.
The spokesperson says an electronic device was seized from Mathis’ residence and an examination revealed evidence consistent with his confession.
According to the spokesperson, Mathis fled to Texas because of the Maine State Police investigation.
Law enforcement agencies were able to locate him in Whitney, Texas. he was arrested on November 16.
Officials say he was extradited back to Maine on November 22 to face charges in Waldo County.
The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are expected.
The spokesperson says Maine State Police are investigating the possibility of additional victims.
Any information regarding additional victims should be forwarded to the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit.
