BUCKSPORT – After more than 40 years of being vacant, Wilson Hall is being completely renovated.
“It’s seen a lot of deterioration. As you can well imagine if you have water coming into a building for 40 years, it’s going to do some damage and it did,” said owner Larry Wahl.
The hall was built in 1850 as part of the East Maine Conference Seminary. It was under their ownership for more than 80 years but eventually closed.
It was almost torn down several times and then became owned by the town. Now, Larry Wahl is giving the building another chance.
“It’s been a long haul since the first of June when we started but a lot has been accomplished in five and a half months,” Wahl said.
Wahl said there was a hole in the middle of all three floors. Two-thirds of the inside is brand new, according to Wahl, and he’s putting in new windows, repairing the bell tower and the foundation.
Wahls said he hopes to turn the building into apartments and space for the public.
“People have said time and time again when they’re gone it’s gone forever,” said Wahl. “I’m a lover of old buildings and I couldn’t see that happen.”
