BANGOR — Wayfair will be permanently closing its Bangor location later this year.
The city-owned building housed a customer service center in Bangor for the past five years.
Officials said nearly 300 employees who were working at the facility accelerated to working remotely to curb the spread of COVID-19.
According to the Wayfair spokesperson, Bangor employees joined the Boston-based virtual team in early March as part of the company’s long-term strategy.
Bangor’s Community and Economic Development Director, Tanya Emery, said Wayfair doesn’t plan to have its employees return to the call center.
Emery said Wayfair is expected to terminate the lease by the end of December.
