STATEWIDE — Wednesday’s swearing in of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris broke down historic gender and racial barriers.
Professor Laura Cowan, director of Women, Gender, and Sexual Studies at the University of Maine, said Harris‘ position of power gives girls of all races the chance to change dreams into reality.
“In order to achieve what a parallel male can achieve is expected to be better and we are criticized for the qualities we admire in men such as intelligence,” Cowan said.
“Women have a great opportunity, but we have not yet won the battle,” she said.
Cowan said this is a moment of hope for the country’s fight against systemic racism.
