ORONO — A University of Maine student is dead after drowning in the Stillwater River on Saturday night.
Orono police said 19 year-old Regan McCleary of Buxton jumped off the Brandon M. Silk Memorial Bridge around 5 p.m.
Reports said a bystander saw him in distress and attempted to rescue him.
Firefighters from Old Town and Orono, as well as the Maine Warden Service and a helicopter crew from the Maine Forest Service, responded to the scene.
DEEMI search and rescue also provided assistance.
Authorities said McCleary’s body was recovered around 7 p.m.
The Orono Police Department is investigating the incident.
