STATEWIDE — Extended unemployment benefits end on March 14.
Lawmakers in Maine are doing what they can to help self-employed and independent contractors
A bill being considered by the legislature’s Labor and Housing Committee directs the Maine Department of Labor to create an unemployment compensation plan for independent workers. In a meeting Wednesday, some lawmakers were in favor of it, while others opposed the legislation.
“The unemployment insurance program also serves as an economic stabilizer for Maine business and community during periods of high unemployment,” said National Association of State Workforce Agencies spokeswoman Laura Boyett.
She said the bill includes some conformity issues with federal law during their next meeting, committee members will discuss and decide whether or not to recommend the bill to the Maine Senate.
