MACHIAS – Triple murder suspect Thomas Bonfanti was arrested for drunk driving in the days before police say he went on a deadly shooting spree in Machias and Jonesboro.
Bonfanti, 63, of Northfield is charged with shooting and killing three people on Feb. 3 — Machias residents Shawn Currey, 57, and Jennifer Bryant-Flynn, 49, and Samual Powers, 33, of Jonesboro.
He is also accused of shooting Regina Hall Long, who survived and remains in a Portland hospital.
Bonfanti was stopped on Main Street in Machias on Friday, Jan. 31, by Officer Tyler Dunbar.
“The officer had probable cause to believe he was operating under the influence and arrested him and took him to Washington County Jail where he blew a Breathalyzer test and confirmed the officer’s suspicions,” Machias Police Chief Todd Hand said Wednesday.
Bonfanti’s blood-alcohol level was 0.19, or more than twice the legal limit of 0.08, the police chief said.
