BANGOR — Tall ships will be setting sail up the Penobscot River July 9 to 18 as a part of the 4-Port Loop to celebrate Maine’s 200th birthday a year late.
Penobscot Maritime Heritage Association President Dick Campbell said the Nao Santa Maria from Spain will be making stops in Bucksport, Bangor and Searsport.
The Bowdoin from Maine Maritime Academy, the Coast Guard Cutter, Abbie Burgess, and some other small vessels will join the tall ship in Bangor.
He said there will be viewing points along the river.
“The Santa Maria is a magnificent vessel,” Campbell said. “To see how it’s been reconstructed is incredible. The height of it. The length of it.”
Campbell added there will be a movie on the sails at the Bangor waterfront on the evening of July 15 followed by a surprise.
