FALMOUTH (WGME) — Skeletal remains found near Interstate 295 in Falmouth may be those of a Richmond woman missing for nearly two years.
Authorities said they believe this could be 38-year-old Anneliese Heinig, who was last seen in late November of 2019 abandoning her car on I-295 near exits 9 and 10.
On Sunday, a hunter was out on a kayak in a marshy area just north of the I-295 overpass in Falmouth.
The police department said that’s when he noticed potential human remains.
Falmouth police were able to start the recovery Sunday and were on the scene again Monday.
Police Chief John Kilbride said the remains could be those of Heinig and that her family has been notified of the discovery but that he’s waiting for confirmation from the state medical examiner’s office.
Kilbride hopes to know in the next day or two and said that they “never forgot about her.”
