OXFORD (WGME) — An Oxford man is lucky to be alive after falling through the ice Wednesday afternoon.
Mark Simpson, 56, was skating on Thompson Lake in Oxford shortly before 4 p.m. when he broke through the ice.
Witnesses called 911 and when first responders arrived, they saw Simpson in the water near the middle of the lake.
Area firefighters, along with game wardens, headed onto the ice with a rescue sled to rescue Simpson.
Authorities said Simpson was transported to Stevens Memorial Hospital in Norway, where his condition was not immediately known.
Maine Game Warden Harry Wiegman warned even though temperatures have been colder recently, ice conditions on Thompson Lake and others in the state remain inconsistent and dangerous.
