LITCHFIELD — One person is dead following a single vehicle crash in Litchfield Saturday.
According to a press release from Maine State Police spokesperson Shannon Moss, police responded to the crash at mile 100 on I-95 at the West Gardiner Toll Plaza at about 2:45 p.m.
The release says the investigation determined that a car traveling southbound hit a guardrail, went back onto the highway and struck the center pylon at the toll plaza, which made the car burst into flames.
The only person in the car was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will perform at autopsy this week to identify the driver.
The release says the crash lane was closed for a couple of hours while the car was removed.
Gardiner Ambulance Service and West Gardiner, Litchfield and Augusta Fire Departments assisted Maine State Police on scene.
