BREWER — Many businesses have suffered or even closed during the pandemic. However, that didn’t stop a group of friends from living out their dream.
Four friends met at what used to be City Side restaurant in Brewer.
Now, they are co-owners of Mad Kat and Company Bar and Grill, which is located where City Side used to be.
“Music brought us together,” said Co-Owner Kathleen Markwith. “So we decided that we needed to keep the music going.”
Markwith had been disc jockeying for City Side for seven years before they had to abruptly shut down.
She said while there have been challenges opening during the pandemic, there has also been a lot of opportunities.
“We’re crazy. Everyone is like why are you starting a business during a pandemic? We’re like, why not,” Markwith said.
Markwith said it’s allowed them to plan accordingly for when the restrictions are lifted.
“Seven tumultuous months later and we are about to do our grand opening,” she said.
They are a rock and roll inspired establishment but it’s not so much about the music as it is about the experience.
“Friends meet and become family,” said Co-Owner Angela Guay. “That’s important to us. That’s what happened to us and that’s how we want people to feel when they come here.”
Their grand opening will be on March 17 on St. Patrick’s day, which is also the day most bars closed last year.
