PATTEN — More than 22 veterans die from suicide each day in the United States and two men in Patten are doing their part to bring attention to this national tragedy.
Steve Curtis and Richard Schmidt are organizing the Maine Run 4 Life, which aims to raise awareness about veteran suicide.
Proceeds from the race will go toward the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation, which provides college scholarships for veterans and military families.
Between 2005 and 2017, more than 79,000 veterans committed suicide, which surpasses the number who were killed in the Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan wars combined.
Curtis said he’s passionate about bringing awareness to the issue of veteran suicide.
The 5K race will start at the baseball field at 4 Carver St. in Patten on Saturday.
The race starts at 9 a.m. and the cost to register is $30. People can sign up in person on the day of the event or online.
