OLD TOWN – The Old Town Police Department has a new way of disposing of any drugs without police officers having to take them in.
Deputy Chief Lee Miller said the police department received a grant that enabled it to provide 1,000 Deterra bags.
The Deterra deactivation system is a bag into which unneeded drugs and warm water are placed.
Miller said there is an ingredient in the bag that deactivates the drugs. The bag then can be thrown in the trash.
“You have the danger of possibly someone trying to take those prescriptions. If you have young kids at home, there’s the chance of them taking it by mistake even. It’s just a good way to just completely get rid of any unused medications,” Miller said.
Miller said each bag can destroy up to 45 pills.
The bags are available at the police station.
