BANGOR — A Bangor man is facing charges after he allegedly stalked a local woman.
Bangor Police Department Sgt. Wade Betters said 32-year-old John Hiatt was arrested Friday afternoon.
Hiatt is the Penobscot County treasurer and a member of the Bangor School Committee.
Betters said a local woman called them on May 5 to report an alleged theft and what she said was concerning behavior by Hiatt, who is her former friend.
The woman told police there were ongoing issues and during one visit Hiatt allegedly became very angry and upset with her.
According to Betters, Hiatt allegedly took over and manipulated her social media account without her permission.
Betters said detectives executed a search warrant at Hiatt’s home and seized electronic devices.
Betters also said in recent days a detective posed as the woman and allegedly began receiving numerous messages from Hiatt.
He is facing a variety of charges, including a felony charge of aggravated invasion of computer privacy, stalking, and two counts of harassment.
