HOLDEN — A Holden police cruiser was stolen by an Orland man in custody Tuesday night.
Holden Police Chief Chris Greeley said 40-year-old Matthew Smullen was pulled over and arrested for suspected drugs and paraphernalia in his vehicle.
According to Greeley, Smullen was handcuffed in the cruiser while the officer on duty was outside with a Penobscot County sheriff’s deputy.
Greeley said the suspect was able to climb through the 11 by 11-inch window into the driver seat of the police cruiser.
“Stealing a car is a felony theft. In this case, he was charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle because he did not get terribly far,” said Greeley.
“So his intention wasn’t to sell the car or destroy it, he was just using it for means of escape. But he’s also looking at the charge of escape,” he said.
Greeley said the investigation is ongoing.
