OLD TOWN – A new restaurant and bar, Kanu, is opening on Main Street in Old Town this weekend.
“It’s been an effort that we’ve been working on since 2017 that’s finally coming to fruition,” said Alex Gray, the owner of Kanu.
The establishment is three floors and has rooftop seating with a bar area.
“I’m really just excited to start something that we hope is a bigger project for the entire city of Old Town,” said Rich Murphy, the general manager of Kanu.
Kanu will be open for dinner Wednesdays through Saturdays and brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.
“Contemporary American dining, you know, wood fire flavors, local craft brews, signature cocktails,” Gray said. “We’ve got a little bit of everything.”
Murphy said they plan to incorporate an espresso machine, located behind the bar, into their cocktails.
“We’re gonna be serving lattes. We’re gonna be serving boozy lattes. We’re gonna be doing milkshakes, also boozy milkshakes,” Murphy said. “We’re also gonna be doing a lot of to go food once we get our skis underneath us.”
Gray said opening any business is difficult, but it’s even more challenging during a pandemic.
“Could we work during COVID? Were we going to be shut down? Were we not? Really getting a determination from the state on what were critical infrastructure projects and what wasn’t,” Gray said. “The ability to gather, train, meet. Obviously social distancing makes things much more difficult, so we’ve done a lot more on the digital sphere.”
According to Gray, reservations are filling up quickly through New Years.
“It’s amazing what we’ve seen for excitement around the community, and we’re grateful for the support,” Gray said.
