BELFAST — A Morrill man charged with murdering a love rival has changed his plea to guilty.
Austin McDevitt, 24, is charged in the March 15, 2019 shooting death of Shane Sauer, 26, of Belfast. He changed his plea at the Waldo Judicial Center on Wednesday morning.
“He just came in and he pled guilty to murder. That’s what happened today,” said Lisa Bogue, assistant attorney general for Maine.
She said the state and the defendant do have a plea agreement that Justice Robert Murray will have to approve.
“The recommendation to the court is 29 years,” Bogue said.
McDevitt told detectives he shot Sauer seven times after Sauer arrived at a camper on Oak Hill Road in Swanville, where he was sleeping with a woman the two men were fighting over.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 4.
