ORONO — Sen. Susan Collins has announced more than $57.5 million to support research and projects at the University of Maine.,
The projects at the university include $35 million to build a ‘Factory of the Future.’
Director of the Advanced Structures and Composites Center Habib Dagher said one goal is to be able to use wood to 3D print a variety of large structures, such as manufacturing low-income homes.
“It’s a research facility to allow us to continue to do high-tech research in the area of composite materials at the University of Maine, but what’s really more important is it has an opportunity to transform the way we do manufacturing in the state of Maine and beyond the state of Maine,” Dagher said.
Dagher said this also provides education opportunities for UMaine students.
He said they hope to have contracts in place for the money by October 2022.
