VAN BUREN – A Van Buren man was killed after he was accidentally shot by a device he created at his home.
According to a post on the Van Buren Police Department’s Facebook page, Ronald Cyr, 65, called 911 Thursday evening from his home on St. Francis Avenue.
Cyr had told dispatchers he had been shot.
He passed away as a result of his injuries.
Officers who responded say they discovered the front door of the home had been outfitted with a “device designed to fire a handgun, should anyone attempt to enter.”
Authorities also say they found other devices inside that led police to contact the State Police Bomb Squad.
According to Van Buren police, an investigation revealed Cyr was killed by the unintentional discharge of one of his homemade devices.
The Maine Warden Service, Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office, State Police and State Police Bomb Squad all assisted Van Buren first responders with the incident.
