STATEWIDE — The Maine National Guard is heading back to the Mexican border this fall.
About 125 Maine guard members will be heading south to replace other members who deployed earlier.
The soldiers will provide support for U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents for a year, much like the 262nd Engineer Company that will return this fall.
In recent months, there has been a surge of people attempting to cross the southwest border.
In addition to Maine, other states will be sending national guard troops to assist federal agents.
The soldiers will not serve in a law enforcement capacity.
