STATEWIDE — The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention has received reports of scam phone calls in which people impersonate CDC and other health officials.
Maine CDC Director Dr. Nirav Shah said the phone calls are coming from numbers with an 844 area code.
He added the callers are people who claim to either be confirming a vaccine appointment or to be a contact tracer.
“Often and unfortunately, as we’ve seen during the times of COVID, there are individuals who will take advantage of concern and anxiety and fear and use that to potentially perpetrate scams. Always be on the lookout, especially if individuals are asking you for private information like your social security number,” Shah said.
Shah said the CDC contact tracers do not ask for your social security number.
Shah also said the CDC has reported these calls to the Attorney General’s Office and the Consumer Protection Bureau.
