MACHIAS — The Maine Department of Transportation is looking to improve a causeway in Machias.
The Machias Dyke Bridge is located on Route 1 over the Middle River. Maine DOT spokesperson Paul Merrill said the Causeway is in dire need of construction. Downeast Salmon Federation Executive Director Dwayne Shaw said the causeway was built in the 1930s and has always needed patches to help it stay intact.
He’s been examining the needs of the aquatic species that live under the dyke which he said need help to pass through some of the gates.
“Our organization has been expressing concerns about the need for fish passage under this bridge or gates that prevent the tide from coming which also means it prevents fish from coming in and exiting on their own volition,” said Shaw.
The DOT is studying ways to rehabilitate or replace the bridge according to Merrill.
Shaw said they don’t have an exact timeline for the construction.
