BANGOR — An Old Town man was sentenced after he was convicted of committing manslaughter and arson in 2019 during an appearance Monday at the Penobscot Judicial Center.
Joseph Johnson, 32, pleaded guilty to charges involving arson and murder in the 2019 death of Berton Conley.
On Nov. 1, 2019, police were called to 258 Essex St., where the crime took place. Conley was taken to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center and later pronounced dead.
According to Justice William Anderson, Johnson was sentenced to 20 years all but nine years suspended, to be followed by four years probation.
Both Cote Choneska and Joseph Johnson were involved in the murder and arson.
“We felt that was an appropriate compromise case resolution so far as Mr. Johnson’s conduct caused death. Mr. Conley’s conduct was a significant instigator, which is what generated the circumstances,” said Jeff Silverstein, defense attorney.
