NORRIDGEWOCK- Around $30,000 was raised for the Cpl. Eugene Cole scholarship.
Hundreds participated in the 2nd annual Cpl. Eugene Cole 5K and Half-Marathon.
“Gene was a great guy. He was a supervisor with the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office, very dedicated, a mentor to young officers, he loved the community,” Sheriff Dale Lancaster with the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office told us.
Cpl. Cole was killed in the line of duty last April.
“This is a small-knit community,” said Samantha Delorie. “When he was shot in the line of duty this whole town shut down.”
The annual 5K and half-marathon is meant to support the family and raise funds for a police academy scholarship in Cole’s name.
“We started this because when you get up, you need to put one foot in front of the other,” said the race director, Jessica Gleason. “Walking and running are a healthy way to heal.”
In the words of Cpl. Cole’s wife, Sheryl, “his shoes may never be filled, but his footsteps can always be followed.”
