STATEWIDE (WGME) — They’re speedy, hard to spot and they’re starting to make their way back to Maine.
Hummingbirds are arriving in Vacationland and experts say now is the best time to get out those feeders for them.
The tiny birds travel thousands of miles to get here and will spend the summer with us.
The best recipe for them is simple and can be made in your kitchen.
It’s four parts water and one part plain white sugar.
“So much of what we hear these days is get away from processed ingredients but it’s the typical white sugar is doing the best at mimicking that they would otherwise be eating in nature,” said Doug Hitchcock of Maine Audubon.
He said honey, especially raw products, can have an iron content that’s too high and can be lethal for hummingbirds.
He also recommended staying away from products containing red dyes.
