AUGUSTA — A bill that will help create more affordable housing in Maine is on its way to the governor’s desk for her signature.
House Speaker Ryan Fecteau, D-Biddeford, sponsored the bill, which would create a commission to increase housing opportunities by reviewing the barriers to producing more affordable housing in Maine.
Some lawmakers have said the state is facing the worst housing crisis it has ever seen.
“We have workers who can’t even live in the communities where they work because they can’t find housing. That’s a problem. We need to begin to address those challenges and make sure that families, seniors — they have a safe and affordable place to live and this will be a step in that direction,” Fecteau said.
Fecteau said the commission will look at land use and zoning restrictions in municipalities around the state.
He said the bill got bipartisan support, which shows both Democrats and Republicans recognize the urgency of addressing Maine’s affordable housing crisis.
