WATERVILLE – An investigation is underway in Waterville following an officer-involved shooting that left a Hartland man dead Thursday.
According to police, it happened late Thursday around 11:30 p.m.
Police were called to the Best Western Hotel parking lot after a report of a man armed with a knife, who was allegedly acting erratically and threatening people, according to a statement from the department.
A police statement said when officers arrived, Eric Porter, 32, of Hartland charged at a police cruiser, then ran up the northbound exit of Interstate 95 and onto the highway.
Police say they found Porter sitting on a guardrail, knife in hand.
The statement said an armed confrontation ensued, and Porter was fatally shot.
Police say the officer involved, Paul Heath, 26, was placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
The Attorney General’s Office is investigating, which is also standard in fatal officer-involved shootings.
