BREWER — Grab your paddles. The annual Kenduskeag Stream Canoe race is back after taking a year off due to COVID-19.
After being canceled for the first time ever last year, the race will be celebrating 54 years and Gumby will be tagging along on the adventure.
Due to the recent passing of Larry Doucette, who was one of the guys behind Gumby’s canoe race appearances, Darryl Boyington said this year will be a tough year without his long-time friend.
“We both decided in 1986 if you can’t be fast then be funny. So we went looking for a motto and we found Gumby,” said Boyington, originator of Gumby. “A 6-foot inflatable green doll to stand in the middle of our canoe. We weren’t fast, but we were at least funny.”
Boyington said Gumby has participated in the annual race for 35 years.
The race is scheduled for April 17 and registration is now full.
