STATEWIDE– If you’re a wild blueberry lover than you definitely want to mark your calendar for the first weekend in August. Governor Janet Mills has declared it Maine’s first ever wild blueberry weekend.
Governor Mills made the announcement at the Blaine House Friday and says Wild Blueberry Weekend will be a yearly event. This year’s inaugural event will feature farm tours and other family-friendly activities at 15 wild blueberry farms in various counties including Franklin, Hancock, Piscataquis, and Washington counties. At least one local farmer says the welcome announcement comes after a very difficult year and he hopes it will be a boost to their tourism efforts.
“In our farm its gonna help us all around. We do agro-tourism. We have cabins that we rent to people who come and we give them tours. We have busloads of people. So this is gonna help us because it’ll help get the word out and get more people coming in,” said Wayne Hanscom of Welch Farms.
Numerous restaurants statewide will also be featuring blueberry-themed products and menu items. To see the full list of participants click on this link.
