AUGUSTA — A proposed bill before state lawmakers would give Gold Star families free access to state parks.
A gold star family is a family whose loved one died in battle while in the military.
The bill’s sponsor said it is the least legislators can do.
“We can honor and reward our veterans and recognize the value of gold star families by providing them the opportunity to enjoy Maine state parks and historic sites at no cost to them,” said Rep. Tiffany Roberts, D-South Berwick.
A spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry noted the significant fiscal cost of the proposal.
The legislature is expected to review the bill in the next few weeks.
