ELLSWORTH — Senior citizens and people with disabilities will have an opportunity to receive free transportation in their communities with the help of grant funding.
The Maine Community Foundation is accepting grant proposals from non-profit organizations that support community-based transportation programs.
Director of Grant Making, Laura Lee said nearly a third of senior citizens in Maine live in communities without access to public transportation.
She said the grants will help maintain social connections among older Mainers.
“It’s really to make sure people are able to access resources that they need as well as really important social opportunities,” said Lee. “During the pandemic, sometimes that change so that it was less taking people to places and sometimes it was bringing needed supplies to people so more turning more into a delivery service of groceries, medications and things like that.”
Lee said people have until September 15 to apply for the grant.
She said grants up to $10,000 are available.
