STATEWIDE — Gov. Janet Mills ordered the United States and state of Maine flags be lowered to half staff on Thursday in honor of Hancock County sheriff’s Deputy Luke Gross.
Gross was killed in the line of duty on Sept. 23 while responding to a call about a vehicle off the road on Route 3 in Trenton.
A Maine State Police spokesperson said Gross was hit by a pickup truck and killed while picking up debris in the road.
The driver of the car that was reported to be off the road had fled before Gross arrived and he is facing charges.
The spokesperson said the operator of the truck that hit Gross is cooperating with the investigation and no charges will be filed at this time.
Funeral services for deputy Gross will be held at noon on Thursday at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.
