BANGOR — At the end of last year, a 27-year old woman was struck and killed by a car outside of Jackson Laboratory.
Now, almost six months later, her family says justice hasn’t been served.
On December 10, 2020, McKenna Unobskey was headed into work at Jackson Laboratory on her day off.
“She was crossing the crosswalk just after being dropped off by her fiance and a car came along and hit her,” said her older brother, Chris Kogut. “I believe it was within 10 minutes she died at the scene.”
According to a press release from the Mount Desert Island Police Department, 63-year-old Russell Clark was driving the jeep that killed her.
The release also said he was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance.
Bar Harbor police said there have been other accidents on the Route 3 area.
On Wednesday, the family received a report from the Hancock County District Attorney’s office saying Clark is not facing any charges.
“To go through a crosswalk and take a person’s life, how is that not, by definition, reckless behavior,” said Mitchel Kogut.
“To have nothing come of it. No justice at all,” said Chris Kogut. “And everything goes on if nothing happened.”
McKenna’s mother said her fear is something like this will happen again.
“What about other parents? I would not want anyone else to go through this,” said Lori Kogut.
Mckenna’s family said they are disappointed with the victim’s advocate role throughout the process.
“I asked about things like a distraction,” said Lori Kogut. “Did he have a phone? Nobody can answer that question. Nobody has told us anything.”
McKenna’s family says the victim’s advocate told them Clark had experienced a medical event.
We reached out to the Hancock County DA’s office for comment but have not heard back yet.
For now, the family is hoping for something, rather than nothing.
“I want my mom to be able to sleep at night. Right now she can’t,” said Chris Kogut. “The loss of McKenna meant something. More than just her life meant something, her death meant something as well.”
Her family describes McKenna as an animal-lover, passionate, intelligent, and hardworking.
