STATEWIDE – It’s the season for giving — and for crimes of opportunity.
To that end, AAA is advising motorists to keep cars locked and packages out of sight while they are out shopping this holiday season.
AAA officials said even empty shopping bags or change in a cup holder could look tempting to a thief.
Elizabeth Brunton, community resource officer with the Bangor Police Department, suggested working with the postal service and other providers when having packages delivered to your home.
“So your package is not left unattended on your porch for extended periods of time. I know certain providers provide text updates or email updates or phone calls sometimes just letting you know your package has been delivered.
Brunton said having a neighbor pick up your package or having it delivered to a safe location is another option.
She also reminded everyone to be beware of deals that sound too good to be true when shopping because they usually are.
She said people should always use caution when shopping on the internet and are ask for extra information, such as social security numbers.
