BANGOR — An epidemiologist at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center is encouraging all Mainers to follow the updated mask guidance from the CDC.
Dr. Robert Pinsky said the Delta variant is spreading rapidly, and all Maine counties are ranked as at least moderate with York and Piscataquis counties being ranked as substantial for community transmission.
Pinsky said he recommends that everyone, even if vaccinated, wears masks in indoor, public spaces and crowded outdoor ones.
He said the all of the COVID-19 vaccines are exceedingly effective in preventing serious illness, but just like any vaccine, they don’t necessarily prevent infection all together.
“It seems to be occurring more easily with the more transmissible Delta variant, and people who are infected, even though they may be asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic and at little risk of getting severely ill, they still can potentially transmit to other people who are at more risk,” Pinsky said.
Pinsky said it is crucial for eligible people who are not vaccinated to get the vaccine to prevent further transmission of COVID-19.
