NEWRY – Saturday continued a weird annual competition here in Maine – it was the 20th Annual North American Wife Carrying Championships at Sunday River Resort.
Olivia Rowling and Jerome Roehm, a Delaware couple, were crowned the winners, according to officials from Sunday River.
They competed against 44 other couples to make it to the final round against a duo from Oxford, Maine, Christine Arsenault and Jesse Wall.
Built to international specifications, the North American Wife Carrying Championship course is 278 yards in length, with two log hurdles, and one water obstacle.
The winning team finished with a time of 55.95 seconds.
The North American Wife Carrying Championships was founded in 1999 and has been held annually in mid October ever since.
The winning team brings home the wife’s weight in beer and five times her weight in cash.
