HANCOCK COUNTY – – Memorial services are being held across the nation on Monday as part of a movement called the Floral Heart Project.
Locally, there will be a service at the Town Green in Blue Hill and another in Ellsworth at Knowlton Park.
The effort, known as the Floral Heart Project, aims to make March 1 a national day of mourning.
A local florist making wreaths for the project said she got a call that makes her appreciate what she does for a living.
“I had a lady call this morning whose sister-in-law had passed last year. The family is from out of state but, obviously, they have connections to here, and they were unable to hold a service or even view the body after she had passed,” said Barbara Courchesne, owner of the Bud Connection.
“They had no closure at all,” said Courchesne.
Courchesne said this is like many of the stories she’s heard and feels this day is important to many people.
