STONINGTON — Many local businesses have been hit hard by the pandemic. In Stonington, Mainers are doing what Mainers do best.
The Harbor Café is one of Stonington’s only year-round restaurants
“You have to stay six feet away from them. There’s plexiglass between every table, so it’s not as informal anymore but they’re dealing with it,” Katie Thompson, who has worked at the café for 12 years, said.
Like many restaurants, the Harbor Café has seen a drop in business thanks to the pandemic.
“My mom told me last week, or maybe the week before, that it was possibly going to have to close permanently and we were like, how can we help?” Aimee Brown, a former employee explained.
With the help of a friend, Brown created a Facebook Fundraiser.
“It just kind of blew up,” Brown said. “So far we’ve raised $18,000 in not even a week.”
As of Wednesday afternoon, they were just $1,500 shy of their $20,000 goal.
The owner says she’s extremely appreciative of everyone’s support.
“It warms my heart. I love the morning group, just the locals that come in every morning,” said Thompson. “I have a lot of fun with them. Those are my favorite memories.”
A link to donate is still on their Facebook page.
However, if you’re in the area, they’re open for dine in or take out.
