STOCKTON SPRINGS — A cemetery restoration company is preparing gravesites for Memorial Day.
Sue Dunham and her fiance, Stu Kallgren, work together to clean, repair, and reset gravestones wherever they have the chance.
“This cemetery has a lot of old veterans it goes back to the revolutionary war and the civil war and these are the people that built this country. That’s why we need to make sure we keep these stones upright and take care of them,” said Stu Kallgren, owner of Maine Gravesite Maintenance.
Mount Recluse Cemetery holds Robert Hitchborn’s remains. Hitchborn was in the Revolutionary War and settled in Stockton Springs to build ships start a family. Many people know Robert Hitchborn as Paul Revere’s cousin.
“He donated the land for this cemetery and he wanted people to have a place, this is the oldest cemetery in Stockton springs,” said Dunham.
“We get phone calls from all over the United States from people that want us to tend their families plot because they can’t be there. We can take care of Memorial Day arrangements for them to plant flowers or clean up the stone,” said Dunham.
Sue Dunham said they’ve received calls from family members in California, Minnesota, and Massachusetts.
The couple said they take pictures of the gravesites before and after and send them to the family members.
Stu Kallgren and Sue Dunham said they clean each stone after they’ve repaired it, and said they feel lucky to be a part of people’s lives.
