STATEWIDE (WGME) — The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is recommending people in some parts of maine mask back up.
That applies to everyone, vaccinated or not.
The CDC said people in places where transmission is substantial or high should return to indoor masking.
For Maine, the CDC is putting Piscataquis and York counties in those categories.
The CDC said even those who are fully vaccinated should mask up in those areas, both indoors and in public, because the Delta variant is so contagious.
“Information on the delta variant from several states and other countries indicate that in rare occasions, some vaccinated people infected with the delta variants after vaccination may be contagious and spread the virus to others,” said CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky.
The CDC also is recommending everyone wear masks in schools — teachers, staff and visitors– even if they’re fully vaccinated.
Dr. Nirav Shah of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention said the average number of cases has gone up to 70 a day in Maine and that half the new cases are from the Delta strain.
