AUGUSTA — Gov. Janet Mills and the state’s public safety commissioner said they are troubled and concerned by the Maine Capitol Police chief’s social media posts.
Capitol Police Chief Russ Gauvin commented and shared posts ridiculing mask mandates.
He questioned the results of the presidential election and supported a police officer who called for violence against Black Lives Matter protesters.
Leaders of the Maine Legislature warn that state capitol police members who cannot maintain the confidence of lawmakers, state employees, and the public should tender their resignations.
Gauvin apologized in a statement Saturday and said he has deleted his personal social media accounts.
