BANGOR- As they’ve done for the past 20 years, members of Union Street’s Brick Church handed out free thanksgiving meals to the public.
“We started prepping food this morning about six in the morning and giving it out at 12 and thus far in this miserable weather we call thanksgiving today. We’ve been able to give out about 60-70 meals, the whole purpose is not to just feed people but to give people hope,” said Bill Rae, the church’s executive director.
In total he said church members prepared over 100 individual meals.
“If we weren’t here, I don’t think they’d have something to eat so that’s one thing. But I think that the reaction we’re getting back from the people here is that they feel good that people care enough about them to help feed them,” he said.
However this year they had to give the meals to people outside in the rain because they couldn’t let anyone inside the building due to COVID-19 restrictions.
“We’ve been doing it for the last 20 years and we’re going to keep doing it. We have a soup kitchen Monday through Friday so if people do need to eat and people need groceries, come here from 4-5 o’clock and get something to eat,” he said.
