BREWER – A new business set to open in Brewer was destroyed by fire Friday evening.
Around 4:50 p.m. crews were called to 95 South Main Street, near the intersection with Wilson Street, for a fully-involved structure fire.
Whiskey River Smokehouse, the newest addition to the growing Brewer waterfront, was still under construction but was set to open its doors some time in the coming months.
Firefighters from several surrounding areas helped fight the fire on a chilly Friday night.
“The cold didn’t help,” said Brewer Public Safety Director Jason Moffitt about fighting the fire. “Traffic was very difficult to deal with right at rush hour, because it’s usually quite chaotic when we get here on scene, [we] have to run hoses across roads and things like that.”
Authorities shut down a portion of South Main Street for more than two hours as firefighters worked to put out the blaze.
The state fire marshal’s office is working to figure out a cause.
