BAR HARBOR – Town officials said charging people for parking their cars has raised a lot more money than expected.
According to Bar Harbor Finance Director Stan Harmon, the town has taken in just over $1 million since it began in May.
That is almost double what they budgeted for.
“We’ve got a council that will probably have to approve where it gets appropriated to help reduce our expenditures on those certain areas, capital areas, I talked about whether it’s streetlights or sidewalk improvements or things like that,” Harmon said.
Harmon said it has probably cost around $650,000 to implement paid parking but only around $75,000 of direct expenses.
Since paid parking is still relatively new, Harmon said town officials are still evaluating things like enforcement.
