BANGOR – It was one of the most unthinkable crimes in Maine’s history and now the man behind it may get another day in court.
A federal judge says 66 year old John Lane should seek a new trial because he claims he was too mentally ill to seek it before this time.
He was sentenced to life in prison in 1985 after he put his girlfriends 4 year old daughter into an oven, blocked the door with a chair and then turned it up on high.
Lane told authorities he thought the little girl was a demon.
The crime took place at an apartment in Auburn and his trial was held in Bangor.
Lane filed a petition for a new trial on Friday and also argued that he had ineffective council during his trial.
The attorney general’s office is now expected to respond to the recommendation that he seek a new trial.
