BANGOR – You may have noticed a gathering of canoes on the Penobscot River in Bangor Saturday afternoon.
It was all to show support for the Penobscot Nation. The tribe has battled the state over rights in certain territories.
Supporters took to the water to spread their message.
“We just want them to know what’s really going on. A lot of people don’t have any idea so we figured we’d publicize it. The state claims that they own the river from Indian Island north and we think it’s the Penobscot River. It’s owned by the Penobscot. It’s kind of a no brainer.” Jim Freeman, Supporter
The event was also to address safety concerns for the river. Those at the event say it’s important to make sure the Penobscot river stays as pollution free as possible.
