STATEWIDE – Fire officials say there were about seventy fires in the last two weeks.
A red flag warning is still in effect statewide meaning, weather conditions are ripe for fire setting. Officials say they had a late start to the season due to the long winter.
Kent Nelson of the Maine Forest Service who says folks need to hold on setting anything on fire. “Well we ask them to kind of hold off until we get some significant rain. Understand that people want to get outside, it’s been a long winter. If they do have a camp fire or any kind of fire just makes sure that it’s, totally out before they leave the area. Some of these fires today have been rekindled from the night before. They weren’t properly extinguished”
Nelson says yesterday, crews around Maine were battling ten to fifteen fires.
He reminds you to check on weather conditions and your local burn regulations.
