MOSCOW – A Maine man is behind bars — accused of swinging a machete at a woman in her front yard. But she fought back.
The 64 year old man from Bingham is being held here at the somerset county jail on multiple charges.
“I would think it would be terrifying” It’s an encounter that has even the chief deputy of somerset county shocked. James Ross, Chief Deputy, Somerset County, “We see all sorts of stuff but this is the only second time i’ve seen a machete used in a crime actually”
James Ross says 64 year old Dwight Hart drove onto a woman’s property on Canada Road in Moscow Sunday evening. “Her property is very well posted he’d driven down the driveway and was loading her lawn chairs into the back of this truck, the woman who lives alone grabbed a garden hoe for protection. She asked the man to stop and tried to take her chairs back.”
“At that time the man reported to have taken a machete out of the back of the truck and started swinging it at the woman.” Ross says the woman hit Hart and Hart nearly struck her. The deputy saw in the hoe handle some strike marks where he had in fact hit the hoe handle with the machete.
Hart drove off but the homeowner got his license plate number so deputies were able to track him down. Ross says this was a random act – and he doesn’t know why hart went on the property. “He wanted chairs i guess, sunday afternoon to sit out, i guess, i don’t know.”
But he does know it could have been deadly. The last incident that i saw with a machete, the mans arm was nearly severed they’re a lethal weapon, absolutely
Hart is charged with attempted theft criminal trespassing and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon. He’s being held on 500 dollars cash bail. If he posts bail, he’ll be under strict monitoring conditions.
